Sagehens Coast To Quarterfinal Win Over Caltech
Whittier, Calif. - Nine different players scored goals as the top-seeded Pomona-Pitzer Water Polo team cruised to a 12-2 win over Caltech in the SCIAC quarterfinals on Friday.
Pomona-Pitzer led 10-0 at the half and was able to rest most of its key players after halftime, as the Sagehens (19-16 overall) will advance to face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in one of two semifinals on Saturday at 3:15 p.m.
Highlighting the day was the first goals of the season for junior Julia Ticus (Evanston, Ill. - pictured) and freshman Hannah Robertson (San Diego, Calif.), who joined the water polo team after swimming season.
Senior captains Annie Oxborough-Yankus (Wallingford, Conn.) and Perri Hopkins (Agoura, Calif.) had two goals apiece in the first half, while freshman Sarah Westcott (Menlo Park, Calif.) added two as well.
Also tallying goals were sophomores Brenda Iglesias (South Gate, Calif.), Kerstin Henshall (Moraga, Calif.), and Alex Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) and freshman Mahalia Prater-Fahey (San Diego, Calif.).
Pomona-Pitzer and CMS last met in the final week of the regular season, with the Sagehens capturing an 8-5 win in their home finale. The winner of that game will face the winner of the other semifinal between Occidental and Redlands in the SCIAC championship on Sunday at 3:15.
