Claremont, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team closed out the Claremont Convergence with a pair of wins, defeating Siena 14-8 and Whittier 7-4.

With the split, Pomona-Pitzer moves to 8-8 on the year, including 2-2 at the Convergence after falling yesterday to UC Irvine and Cal Baptist.

Alyssa Woodward (Riverside, Calif. -pictured) scored the first two goals for the Sagehens in both games. In the opening contest against Siena, she staked Pomona-Pitzer to a 2-0 lead in the first 1:31.

Pomona-Pitzer led 4-2 after the first quarter, and Perri Hopkins (Agoura, Calif.) added a goal to make it 5-2, before Siena crawled back to within 5-4 with 4:07 to go in the half. However, the Sagehens closed out the half on a 3-0 run, including five-meter goals from Annie Oxborough-Yankus (Wallingford, Conn.) and Brenda Iglesias to take an 8-4 lead into the break.

Woodward and Hopkins extended the run to 5-0 spanning both halves with the first two goals of the third quarter, but Katie Ness had back-to-back goals to start a 3-0 Siena run that got the Sagehen lead down to 10-7 early in the fourth quarter.

Sarah Westcott (Menlo Park, Calif.) stopped the run for the Sagehens, before Stephanie Bundas answered for Siena to make the score 11-8. But that was as close as the Saints could come as Mahalia Prater-Fahey (San Diego, Calif.) had back-to-back goals for Pomona-Pitzer and Alex Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) capped off the scoring for a 14-8 win.

Woodward and Prater-Fahey led the way with three goals apiece, while Westcott and Hopkins each added two more for the Sagehens.

In the second game, Whittier's Katrina Thoreson scored first for the Poets, before Woodward answered back with two straight goals to give the Sagehens a 2-1 lead. Melissa Reynoso scored to make it 2-2 early in the second quarter, but Prater-Fahey broke the tie and Sarah Westcott scored with 31 seconds left in the opening half to give Pomona-Pitzer a 4-2 lead heading into the break.

Just as they did in the first two quarters, Whittier struck first in the third as Samantha Pudwill found the net with 2:04 to go. However, Oxborough-Yankus came back on the ensuing Pomona-Pitzer possession for a goal to make it 5-3, and Kerstin Henshall (Moraga, Calif.) stretched it to 6-3 with 6:18 to go with a long shot into the upper-right corner.

Kristina Thoreson scored her second goal of the match to make it 6-4 with 3:16 to play, but for the second time in the half, Oxborough-Yankus answered a Whittier goal on Pomona-Pitzer's ensuing possession to push the lead back to 7-4 with 2:50 on the clock and close out the scoring. Woodward and Oxborough-Yankus had two goals apiece in the win.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next weekend for games against Pacific, Iona and Arizona State.
