CMS Fights Off Set Point, Captures 3-0 Win Over Sagehens

Claremont, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Volleyball team saved a Pomona-Pitzer set point in the second set before finishing off a 3-0 win on Tuesday evening at Ducey Gymnasium.

The Athenas improve to 15-8 overall and 6-3 in the SCIAC with the win, including nine wins in their last 10 matches, as set scores were 25-16, 27-25 and 25-11. Pomona-Pitzer slips to 5-14 and 3-6 in conference play with the loss.

In the opening set, CMS jumped out quickly and led 3-0 before the Sagehens got back to within 4-3. CMS answered with a 5-0 run, and stretched the lead up to as much as 17-6 before settling for the 25-16 win.

The second set came right down to the wire as CMS held a 24-22 lead before junior defensive specialist Lauren Kim (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) saved set point with a spectacular dig inches off the floor. Freshman outside hitter Ellen Yamasaki (Salinas, Calif.) then had a fortuitous mis-hit fall in for a point in front of the CMS back row to give the Sagehens a 25-24 lead and a chance to even up the match at one set apiece.

The Athenas, though, dug out a Pomona-Pitzer attack and won the point, then used a service ace to take the lead back at 26-25. Regina Mullen followed with a tip over two Sagehen blockers that fell in for the set-winning point to give Claremont-Mudd-Scripps the 27-25 win and a 2-0 lead.

The third set was tied 6-6, before the Athenas used a 9-0 run to take command, ending any Sagehen comeback hopes, as they coasted to a 25-11 win to seal the victory.

Pomona-Pitzer will next be in action when it has a busy weekend, with two matches apiece on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Sagehens will host a SCIAC match with Whittier at 5 p.m. and a non-league match against NYU at 7:30. On Saturday, they hosts Chapman at 1 p.m., before traveling to Caltech for a SCIAC match at 6 p.m.
