Women's Track and Field Competes In SCIAC Championships This Weekend
Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Track and Field team will compete at the SCIAC Championships this Friday and Saturday at Redlands.
The Sagehens feature several competitors who challenge for individual championships and/or all-conference honors. Junior Annie Lydens, the defending SCIAC champion and second-place finisher nationally in the 5000 last year, is the top Pomona-Pitzer performer to watch.
Lydens only ranks eighth in the SCIAC this season, but has had a slow recovery from foot surgery after finishing third in the NCAA Cross Country championships last fall and hasn't competed at full speed yet (her top time this year is over 18:00, and she came in under 17:00 in her fastest race last year, as well as 17:06 at nationals). Lydens also ranks fifth in the SCIAC this season in the 1500.
Katie Barton (pictured) will look to put a cap on an impressive freshman campaign in the hurdles, as she heads to SCIACs ranked fourth in the 400-meter hurdles and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles. She will be a strong competitor for all-conference honors in both events, and could be a dark horse candidate to win the 400-meter, although Ashley Lively of Redlands is the odds-on favorite with her fastest time one second faster than anyone else in the field.
The Sagehens have the most depth in the 800 meters with three runners in the top 12 in the conference, led by Stephanie Micham (ninth), Dot Silverman (10th) and Roxanne Cook (12th). ShaKayla Rouse is the team's top sprinter, ranking 12th in the 100 meters and 13th in the 400, while Leslie Canter, who set the school record in the steeplechase in her last outing, ranks seventh in that event.
The top competitor for the Sagehens in the field events is Alex Oxborough-Yankus, who heads to SCIACs ranked sixth in the javelin and ninth in the hammer throw. Erin Delaria is also a strong competitor in the pole vault, where she ranks tenth.
