The Pomona-Pitzer women's tennis team is set to begin the 2016 spring season on February 14th.
The Sagehens start out the season ranked seventh overall by ITA and are ranked second in the West Region right behind SCIAC rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
Pomona-Pitzer finished 15-7 overall last season and went 9-2 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Sagehens fell in the SCIAC Championship to cross town rival CMS 7-2 and made it to the NCAA West Regional where they fell again to CMS 5-0.
The Sagehens return 10 players from the 2015 season and includes three seniors, two juniors and five sophomores.
Senior Lea Lynn Yen leads the Sagehens this season coming off of an All-American 2015 campaign where she played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Sagehens and was a National qualifier in doubles with teammate Grace Hruska after reaching the regional finals of the Fall ITA Championships, finishing the year ranked No. 10 in the nation to earn All-America honors for the second time in her career.
Senior Marie Fleming finished the 2015 season earning SCIAC All-Academic honors and was named to the ITA Scholar Athlete Team. Fleming ended last season with a 5-1 record in singles and a 3-0 mark in doubles.
Senior Mae Coyiuto returns to the team this season after missing the 2015 season due to injury. Coyiuto was First-Team All-SCIAC in 2014 and also earned Capital One Academic All-District, SCIAC All-Academic and an ITA Scholar-Athlete Selection. Coyiuto had a 17-8 record in singles and a 20-8 record in doubles, leading the team in wins in both categories.
Junior Maddie Gordon will provide good experience for the Sagehens as she spent the 2015 season playing in the No.3 doubles spot and occasionally participated in singles as well. Gordon finished with a 19-5 record in doubles, 18-4 at duals and 1-1 at Ojai.
Sophomore Grace Hruska will headline the underclassman for this season as she is coming off of an All-American 2015 season as Yen's doubles partner. Hruska also was named to the Second Team-All-SCIAC and finished the year ranked No. 10 in doubles with a 14-8 record and went 15-5 in singles competition.
Pomona-Pitzer will rely on underclassman to help carry some of the load this season and add to the depth of the overall team. Junior Mallory Roth and sophomores Emily Chen, Shivani Doraiswami, Emily Kuo and Maryann Zhao will look fill key slots in this year's lineup and the Sagehens will see what freshman Caroline Casper, Arianna Chen, Jessica Folsom, Lucy Jiang and Joy Kim can bring to the team as well.
The Sagehens are optimistic that their mix of young players and experienced upperclassman can compete for a SCIAC and regional title.
Pomona-Pitzer opens up the season on February 14th at home against UC San Diego at 11 a.m.
