Pomona-Pitzer Holds Annual National Girls And Women In Sport Day

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Pomona-Pitzer women's athletic teams and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee hosted a National Girls and Women in Sport Day on the campus of Pomona and Pitzer College on this past Saturday.

The nationwide celebration of National Girls and Women in Sport Day began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic Volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure recognition for past and current sport achievements, to promote the positive influence of sports participation, and to support access for women in sports.

Each year in February, thousands of sports educators, coaches, athletic directors, recreation directors, students and parents across the country show their support of the Day by organizing and sponsoring various events.

The National Girls and Women in Sports Day Coalition is responsible for organizing the national NGWSD. The Coalition combines the experience and resources of the four premiere girls- and women-serving organizations in the United States: President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, Girls Incorporated, National Women's Law Center, and the Women's Sports Foundation.

Pomona and Pitzer Athletics and the Draper Center for Community Partnerships Pomona Partners have joined forces since 2000 in planning fun and educational events for local junior high female students.  Student-athletes, administrators and faculty from Pomona and Pitzer Colleges, and Pomona Partners staff and student liaisons host the event.

The student athletes volunteered their time to make posters, decorate the gym, shoot hoops, play warm up games, run clinics in badminton, basketball, hip hop, and ultimate frisbee, and serve lunch to the participants.

The activities concluded with the student athletes and participants gathering at Haldeman Pool where the groups ate lunch and cheered on the Pomona-Pitzer men's and women's swimming and diving teams as they defeated SCIAC opponent Occidental.
