Three Sagehens Honored On All-SCIAC Teams

Claremont, Calif. - Senior Sammy Chao and sophomore Mae Coyiuto (pictured) were named to the All-SCIAC Women's Tennis first team in a vote of the league's coaches, it was announced today.

Sophomore Lea Lynn Yen was named to the second team to give Pomona-Pitzer three players selected on the SCIAC's postseason awards squad.

Chao played at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles (with Yen) this season. Chao and Yen earned the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) West Region championship in doubles in the fall and advanced to the national semifinals to earn All-America honors. This spring, they combined for a 16-8 doubles record (21-9 including the fall) and earned a selection to the Division III nationals which begin on May 22.

Chao earned All-SCIAC honors for the fourth time in her career, including two first-team honors and two second-team selections. She was an All-American in doubles as a junior as well, when she reached the NCAA quarterfinals with graduated senior Kara Wang.

Coyiuto, meanwhile, earned first-team All-SCIAC honors for the second year in a row. She led the Sagehens in victories this season, compiling a 37-16 record in singles and doubles. Coyiuto was 17-8 in singles, mostly playing at No. 2, but moving up to No. 1 in the NCAA Regionals. In doubles, she and senior Arthi Padmanabhan combined for a 20-8 record and reached the semifinals of the doubles tournament at the Ojai Valley Championships in April.

The Sagehens finished the year with a 17-8 overall record and reached as high as No. 6 in the final regular season rankings from the ITA.
