Chao, Yen Earn Bid To NCAA Doubles Championships

Claremont, Calif. - Senior Sammy Chao and sophomore Lea Lynn Yen were one of 16 doubles teams chosen to participate in the NCAA Division III Doubles Championships, beginning on May 19.

Chao (left) and Yen (right) earned All-America honors in the fall by winning the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) West Region championship back in October. The duo advanced to the semifinals of the nationals in Florida before finally falling.

The spring, Chao and Yen have amassed a 14-7 doubles record against a difficult schedule that featured 14 of 19 dual opponents nationally ranked in the top 30.

Chao also qualified in doubles last year when playing with graduated senior Kara Wang. Chao and Wang advanced to the quarterfinals at the Division III nationals to earn All-America honors.

Yen and Chao's efforts this season have helped Pomona-Pitzer climb as high as No. 6 in the national ITA Division III poll and earn a bid to the NCAA Division III Championships. The Sagehens will open play against UC Santa Cruz on Friday at 10 a.m. at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
