Sagehens Shut Out Whittier In Regular Season Finale
Whittier, Calif. - The No. 6-ranked Women's Tennis team swept singles and doubles as it captured a 9-0 win over Whittier in its final regular season match of 2014.
The Sagehens improve to 14-5 overall on the year and 7-1 in the SCIAC, clinching the second seed in the conference tournament, which will be held at CMS on May 2-3. Whittier falls to 9-10 overall and 3-5 in the SCIAC with the loss.
Senior Sammy Chao (pictured) won at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in her final regular season match. She took a 6-1, 7-5 decision at singles after teaming with Lea Lynn Yen to win 8-4 in doubles.
Mae Coyiuto and Arthi Padmanabhan also had a singles-doubles sweep, winning at No. 2 doubles 8-2. Coyiuto coasted to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, while Padmanabhan won 6-0, 4-6, 10-1 by dominating the first and third sets.
Maddie Gordon, Claire Willey and Mallory Roth all breezed to straight-sets wins in singles at 4, 5 and 6, respectively, while Willey and Gordon played together in doubles for the first time in the No. 3 position and won 8-4.
Pomona-Pitzer will next be in action at the Ojai Tournament next weekend before beginning the postseason on March 3 against seventh-seeded Caltech.
