Sagehens Shut Out Occidental, Fall To No. 2 Williams
Claremont, Calif. - No. 6 The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team picked up a 9-0 shutout win at Occidental in the morning, but returned home and fell 8-1 to No. 2 Williams in the afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
With the split, the Sagehens are now 11-4 on the year and 4-0 in the SCIAC. Williams improves to 8-0 with the win.
Senior Arthi Padmanabhan and junior Mae Coyiuto picked up the lone point for the Sagehens against Williams at No. 3 doubles, while also winning at No. 2 doubles at Occidental.
Senior Sammy Chao was tested at No. 1 singles in the morning before prevailing over Keilani Ericksen 6-7 (9-7) 6-3, 10-6. The Sagehens lost only one game at 2-6 singles, as Coyiuto, Maddie Gordon and Mallory Roth (pictured) won 6-0, 6-0 decisions at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6, and Padmanabhan won after her opponent retired due to injury after a 6-0 first set.
After Williams took a 2-1 lead after doubles, the Ephs were able to control singles to clinch the win early on. Chao and Kara Shoemaker had a good battle at No. 1 singles, where Shoemaker prevailed 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. Coyiuto and Kathleen Elkins were the last to finish at No. 2, playing several extended rallies before Elkins won the final three games to come away with a 6-3, 7-5 win.
Pomona-Pitzer will have a week of rest before returning to action to face No. 5 CMS at home next Saturday at 10 a.m. in a key SCIAC match-up.
