Sagehens Storm Past Whitman For Hen-Athena Title
Claremont, Calif. - The No. 12-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team won 8-2 at all three doubles courts and cruised to an 8-1 win over No. 16 Whitman on Sunday on the second day of the inaugural Hen-Athena Tournament.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 9-3 on the season, including 5-1 in a six-matches-in-10-days stretch against teams which were all ranked in the top 16 nationally. Pomona-Pitzer also won the Hen-Athena Tournament by virtue of having the greatest point differential in its two matches (winning them both 8-1).
The Sagehens dominated No. 6 Middlebury on Saturday in their first match of the tournament and carried that momentum over into Sunday, winning all three doubles matches 8-2. Senior Sammy Chao and sophomore Lea Lynn Yen (pictured) won at No. 1, sophomore Marie Fleming and freshman Rosemary Pelch took the win at No. 2, and senior Arthi Padmanabhan and sophomore Mae Coyiuto earned the decision at No. 3.
Singles saw Pomona-Pitzer dominate as well on every line except the top one, where Courtney Lawless took a three-setter (10-6 in the abbreviated third-set tiebreaker). In the other five matches, the Sagehens lost a total of 12 games.
Yen (6-0, 6-1) and Padmanabhan (6-1, 6-0) each lost only one game in their two set wins at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Pelch was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 5, while freshman Maddie Gordon (6-1, 6-3) and Coyiuto (6-2, 6-2) each dropped only four games on their way to straight-set wins.
Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Friday when it hosts Caltech for a 2 p.m. contest.
