Chao, Yen Advance To Semifinals Of ITA Nationals
Fort Myers, Fla. - Senior Sammy Chao and sophomore Lea Lynn Yen earned a 6-0, 6-0 win in the quarterfinals of the ITA Small College Nationals at the Three Oaks Tennis Center in Fort Myers Thursday afternoon.
With the win over a doubles team from St. Thomas (Minn.), the Sagehen duo, which is seeded third at the event, moves on to tomorrow semifinals at 9:30 a.m. (PST) against the winner of the second-seeded doubles combination from Williams (Shoemaker/Curran) and an unseeded duo from DePauw (Earnhardt/MacPhail). They will then play in either the championship match or the third-place match at 1:30 (PST).
Chao and Yen qualified for the nationals by winning the ITA West Regional on Sept. 29 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, defeating a duo from the host Athenas in the finals 7-6, 7-6. The pair also started out the ITA Regionals with a shutout win in the first round (8-0).
By qualifying for ITA Nationals, Chao and Yen have already guaranteed themselves All-America status for the 2013-14 season. Chao also earned All-America status a year ago, with graduated senior Kara Wang, by reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Championships in May.
