Kalamazoo, Mich. - Senior Kara Wang (Saratoga, Calif.) and junior Sammy Chao (Hong Kong - pictured) earned a three-set win on the opening day of the NCAA Division III Doubles Championships on Thursday at Kalamazoo College.
Wang and Chao earned a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over Tai Lucero and Michelle Schupbach of Coe to advance to the quarterfinal round. The duo will face the second seed in the entire tournament, Gabrielle Clark and Annette Sullivan of Emory, tomorrow at 4 p.m. EST (schedule subject to change).
By reaching the quarterfinals, Chao and Wang earn All-America distinction for the 2013 season. Wang has now been named an All-American for the fourth time in her career (three times in doubles, once in singles), while Chao earned the honor for the first time.
On the men's side, seniors Frankie Allinson (McGregor, Texas) and Max Sabel (Sun Valley, Idaho) fell 6-4, 6-2 to Matt Bettles and Rob Crompton of Bates, ending their season after winning 20 matches this season, including the Fall ITA.
The Women's Track and Field season also came to an end, as freshman Ailene Nguyen (Saratoga, Calif.) jumped 16-10.5 at the Division III National Championships in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Nguyen, who broke school records in the long jump and triple jump this season, competed despite being at less than 100 percent due to illness and did not qualify for the finals.
