Solomon Helps Sagehens Advance To SCIAC Championship

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - Junior Jamie Solomon (Los Gatos, Calif. - pictured) won a three-setter at No. 1 singles to break a 4-4 tie and give No. 16 Pomona-Pitzer a 5-4 win over No. 23 Redlands in the SCIAC semifinals on Friday, hosted by Cal Lutheran.

With the win, second-seeded Pomona-Pitzer improves to 14-6 overall and 8-1 against SCIAC opponents this season (including regular season and postseason), as it moves on to tomorrow's championship match against top-seeded CMS, which handed the Sagehens their only league loss during the regular season.

The Sagehens started the day with a quick 5-0 win over seventh-seeded Caltech in the quarterfinals Friday morning, after sweeping doubles and getting singles wins from seniors Nicole Holsted (Edmund, Okla.) and Emily Kawahara (Sacramento, Calif.). The duo combined for an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles, and Holsted did not drop a game in singles either, winning 6-0, 6-0.

The second match of the day against Redlands started out as if it might be another easy win, as the Sagehens swept doubles again, led by Solomon and junior Kara Wang (Saratoga, Calif.) with an 8-0 win at No. 1. Sophomore Sammy Chao (Hong Kong, China) then picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles to make the score 4-0.

However, Redlands was able to chip away and pull even by winning every match from 3-6 singles to make the score 4-4. Solomon dropped the first set 6-3 to Jessica Ly, but battled back to take the second set 6-2. The entire match and the spot in the championship then came down to the third set, and after the two players split the first two games, Solomon pulled away for a 6-2 win to make the final score 5-4.

Pomona-Pitzer has won three straight SCIAC Championships, but will be the decided underdog tomorrow against CMS, which is ranked No. 9 nationally and went undefeated in the SCIAC this season.
