Second-Seeded Sagehens Open SCIAC Tournament Friday
Claremont, Calif. - The second-seeded Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team begins play at the SCIAC Tournament at Cal Lutheran on Friday morning with a 10 a.m. match against Caltech.
The winner of the Pomona-Pitzer vs. Caltech match will advance to the semifinals against the winner of the quarterfinal between third-seeded Redlands and sixth-seeded Whittier, which will take place on Friday afternoon.
The other half of the bracket features top-seeded CMS against eighth-seeded Occidental and fourth-seeded Cal Lutheran against fifth-seeded La Verne. The final rounds will take place on Saturday morning, including the championship match between the two semifinal winners (a third-place, fifth-place and seventh-place match will also be held).
The Sagehens come into the weekend with a 12-6 record overall and a 6-1 mark in the SCIAC, with the only loss coming at CMS in mid-April. Pomona-Pitzer is also ranked No. 15 in the country in the most recent ITA rankings (CMS is ranked ninth, and Redlands is No. 22).
Junior Jamie Solomon (Los Gatos, Calif. - pictured) plays No. 1 in both singles and doubles for the Sagehens, along with doubles partner Kara Wang (Saratoga, Calif.). Sammy Chao (Hong Kong, China) plays No. 2 and is undefeated this season against Division III opponents (10-0).
Chao and Wang have both been in and out of the singles lineup this season with injuries, but sophomore Arthi Padmanabhan (Saratoga, Calif.), an All-SCIAC selection a year ago, has performed well while consistently moving up a line. Seniors Emily Kawahara (Sacramento, Calif.) and Nicole Holsted (Edmund, Okla.) have also been important leaders in singles, and as the No. 3 doubles team.
