Sagehen Women Shine at Preview Meet
Pomona-Pitzer's women's cross country team placed two runners in the top-10 at the 2009 West Region Preview Meet Saturday. Running at home on campus, the Sagehens placed fourth out of ten teams.
Frosh Roxanne Cook finished ninth in 23:44 over the 6000 meter (3.7 mile) to finish as Pomona-Pitzer's top individual. Senior Rose Haag was close behind in 10th (23:48). The Sagehen top five were rounded out by Kayla Eland (29th, 24:48), Kate Brieger (32nd, 24:59), and Rachel Haislet (35th, 25:13).
UC Irvine won the meet with 25 points, followed by Occidental (68), UC Santa Cruz (94), and Pomona-Pitzer (108). The Sagehens finished ahead of Whittier (122), Redlands (128), Claremont-M-S 'B' team (221), Cal Lutheran (224), Caltech (268), and La Verne (273).
The meet, the first at home for Pomona-Pitzer since 1990, gave teams a chance to see the course that will be used for the 2009 NCAA III West Region Meet on November 14.
"We ran well considering how hard our training has been recently," said Women's Coach Kirk Reynolds. "We've been practicing on this course for some time, so it was nice to actually race others on it. We're looking forward to our two SCIAC races now, as well as the Region meet back here in a few weeks. I was particularly impressed with Roxey's race today to lead us. She's a terrific, gutty runner."
