Pomona-Pitzer Women's XC Opens 2009 Season at UC Irvine Invite
Pomona-Pitzer's women's cross country squad opened the 2009 season with a strong showing at the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday, September 12. The Sagehens finished fifth out of 11 teams.
Seniors Rose Haag (14th, 19:35) and Rachel Haislet (15th, 19:37) worked together to lead the squad. Frosh Roxanne Cook (28th, 20:13), junior Kate Brieger (40th, 20:35), and frosh Megan Farrell (51st, 21:12) rounded out the top five for Pomona-Pitzer. A total of 114 runners competed.
"I thought we competed well," said Coach Kirk Reynolds. "We were a little rusty, but this was a good starting point and gives us a great idea of our progress so far this season, which has been good. I'd like to see our top five's gap close up, and I'd like us to be a bit more aggressive from the starting gun, or whistle, or horn -- or whatever they use."
Pomona-Pitzer scored 96 points to finish fifth behind Cal Coast Club (49), Southwestern (55), CSU San Bernardino (70), and UC Santa Cruz (95), but ahead of Univ. of San Diego, CSU Dominguez Hills, Gateway CC, Grand Canyon CC, Santa Ana CC and Soka University.
Pomona-Pitzer toes the line again this coming Saturday at the UC Riverside Invitational among the Inland Empire agricultural orange groves.
