Women's Cross Country Finishes 2nd at Regionals
Pomona-Pitzer's women's cross country team took a surprising
second place at the NCAA Division III West Region cross
country meet Saturday, November 14 to qualify to the NCAA
National meet this coming weekend in Hanover, Indiana.
The Sagehen harriers scored 89 points to narrowly miss winning the
Regional crown by one point. SCIAC foe Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
tallied a winning 88 points, following by Pomona-Pitzer (89),
Willamette (104), and Whitman and Whitworth (both at 126). A
total of 16 teams scored in the meet.
Junior Alicia Freese led Pomona-Pitzer with her third-place finish
in 21:54 -- a strong showing after taking a month off due to
injury. Senior Anna Scharfen took 10th (22:22), senior Maddy
Kieselhorst took 11th (22:26), junior Rose Haag took 25th
(23:06), and junior Zoe Meyers took 40th (23:35). The top four all
earned All-Region honors.
The Sagehens last competed at the NCAA National meet in 1982 --
well before all of this year's team members were born.
