Women's Track & Field Opens Season in Home Meet

Pomona-Pitzer's women's track and field team opened the 2009 season in style Saturday, Feb. 21. Running at home on the blue Strehle Track, the Sagehens posted some excitingly strong early-season marks at the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers Meet.

"I was very impressed with our team's performances," stated Head Women's Coach Kirk Reynolds. "We've been having great practices for a few weeks now, but to see the athletes come out and perform well in a meet was terrific fun to see. I'm optimistic and eager for the rest of the season."

The meet featured four teams from SCIAC - Pomona-Pitzer, Occidental, Whittier and La Verne - plus Loyola Marymount, Chapman, West LA College, UC Irvine, and other individuals. Nearly 600 athletes competed under pleasant, 70-degree skies.

Senior Maddy Kieselhorst took second in both the 800m (2:25.45) and the mile (5:32.37), while junior Ellie Chestnut won the hammer (136-8), and junior Claire McGroder won the 200m (27.29). The 4x400m relay team of McGroder, Kieselhorst, JaCiara Johnson and Traci Lopez won the final event of the day.

The Sagehens do not compete this coming weekend, but resume competition in the SCIAC Invite on Saturday, March 7 at Redlands.
