Women's Tennis Finishes 5th at Indoor Nationals

Pomona-Pitzer Women’s Tennis traveled this past weekend
(2/28-3/1/09) to Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN to
compete in the inaugural ITA D-III Indoor Team Nationals. Entering
the tournament of eight teams as the #4 seed, the Sagehens fell 6-3
to the eventual winners, Carnegie Mellon, in the first round. In
the consolation semi-finals the next day, Pomona-Pitzer made a
quick turnaround, defeating Coe College 8-1. The Sagehens continued
their dominating play later the same day, prevailing 7-2 over
DePauw University to take 5th place overall.
The Hens showed their depth and strength in singles throughout the
tournament. Due to the injury of All-American and 2007 ITA D-III
Fall Doubles Champion Olivia Muesse, the team had to readjust
doubles teams and move everyone up in the lineup. Senior Kathryn
Myers smoothly stepped into the #6 singles spot, and freshman Paige
Wolstencroft moved into the doubles lineup. The team played some
fantastic tennis throughout, but especially impressive were senior
Lindsay Clough at #4 singles and freshman Nicole Holsted at #5
singles, who are also partners at #3 doubles. Both players went
undefeated in their singles matches throughout the tournament, and
won two of their three doubles matches.
The first spring rankings have just been released, and the
Pomona-Pitzer women are currently ranked at #9 in the nation.
