Swim and Dive 2009-2010 Season Preview

After finishing last season tied for second in the final SCIAC standings, the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Swimming and Diving team hope to continue their success amd make some noise this season all the way through to the NCAA Championships. The team returns eight swimmers who scored in at least one event at SCIACs last year and add a very talented group of freshmen to the fold. The captains for the 2009-2010 season will be seniors Naneh Apkarian, Kristen Boysen, Kimi Ide-Foster and Katie Tonkovich.
Here’s an
early in-depth look at the team:
Sprint
Kristen Lindbergh(So.) leads the sprinters after a break-out performance as a freshman in which she set two school records and won an individual SCIAC title. This year she will look to defend her position as one of the top sprinters in the conference and take the next step by qualifying for NCAAs. Also watch for freshman Charlotte Dorhn to make some waves in the shorter events early on.
Distance
Last year, one of the few areas that was lacking for the Women’s team were the distance events as no one on the squad finished in the top 8 at conference in either the 500 or the 1650. Hopefully, that all changes with the addition of freshman Hannah Miller, as well as a healthier finish for Lizzie Aby (Jr.), both of whom will be counted on heavily to score points throughout the season.
Butterfly
Leading the way for the women in the fly will be All-American Naomi Laporte (Jr.), who was the SCIAC champion in the 200 fly and finished 12th in the nation in the same event. Adding depth will be Dana Kingman (Jr.) and Isso Shimamoto (Jr.).
Backstroke
Kristen Boysen(Sr.), who holds the 3rd fastest 200 backstroke time in P-P history, returns as the top backstroker for the Hens. She will be looked upon for leadership and looks to finish off her collegiate swimming career with a bang. Look for freshman Julia Ticus to come and establish herself early on as a force to be reckoned with in both distances as well.
Breastroke
With the graduation of Kathleen Hall and Jade McGill, two freshmen will have to shoulder the load for the up-coming season in the breastroke. Sarah Tuggy and Juliette Walker, both of whom swam fast enough in high school to be in the top-8 at SCIACs last year, will do their part in helping the women continue their ascent to the top of the conference.
Individual Medley
Dana Kingmanand Lizzie Aby (Jr.) lead a fantastic IM group for the women. Both swam extremely well at the conference meet turning in a pair of “top-10 all-time performances” in the 400 IM by a Sagehen with Dana finishing 3rd overall and Lizzie finishing 5th overall at SCIACs.
The
Sagehens open their 2009-2010 campaign on Oct. 24th at the Redlands
Invitational, hosted by the University of Redlands at the Thompson
Aquatic Center.
