Five Sagehens Named to All-SCIAC Team

Five Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens were named to the SCIAC
All-Conference Team; Senior captain Billie McGrane (Collegeville,
PA/Methacton HS) and freshman Alyssa Corley (Colorado Springs,
CO/Air Academy HS) were named to the All-SCIAC First Team while
sophomores Mackenzie Smith (Pasadena, CA/Polytechnic HS) and
Christine Calderon (Hemet, CA/West Valley HS) and freshman Alexis
Garcia (West Covina/Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) were named to
the All-SCIAC Second Team.
Billie McGrane was name to the First Team at the Utility
position. McGrane split time on the field as pitcher and in
the outfield. Bille finished the season with a P-P record
setting 1.91 ERA and a 10-7 record. Bille also batted an
impressive .272 on the season with 28 hits and 17 RBI. In the
outfield Billie led the Sagehens defensively with a .986 fielding
percentage.
Alyssa Corley made an immediate impact as a freshman earning First
Team All-SCIAC honors behind the plate at the catcher
position. Ali hit an impressive .379 on the season finishing
with 50 hits, 13 doubles, 1 triple, P-P record breaking 13 homeruns
and P-P record breaking 42 RBI. Corley was walked 15 times
and had a respectable .945 fielding percentage.
Mackenzie Smith was named All-SCIAC for the third season in a
row! Smith was named All-SCIAC Second Team at the Outfield
position. Smith hit .331 with 40 hits, scoring 20 runs, 8
doubles, 2 homeruns and 23 RBI. Mackenzie also finished the
season with a .951 fielding percentage in the outfield. Smith
is the only Saghen to be named All-SCIAC each year of her
career.
Christine Calderon was named to the All-SCIAC Second Team at the
Third Base Position. Calderon led our infield with an
outstanding .972 fielding percentage. Christine also helped
the Hens in the batter’s box finishing with an impressive
.336 batting average with 39 hits, scoring 21 runs, hitting 9
doubles, 3 homeruns and 22 RBI. Christine also stole 4 bases
on the season.
Freshman hitter Alexis Garcia was named to the Second Team at the
DP/Designated Player position for her outstanding contribution to
the Sagehens’ line-up. Garcia, also a pitcher for the
Sagehens, led the team in the batter’s box. Garcia
finished the season with the highest batting average on the team at
.381. Alexis had 48 hits, 13 doubles, 1 triple and
contributed 17 RBI.
The Sagehens completed the 2008 campaign with a 21-19 record,
breaking the score record for single-season wins, and finishing in
the top four in the SCIAC Conference and qualifying for the
first-ever SCIAC Tournament. The 2008 season was also
the first season the Sagehens saw five athletes named to the
All-SCIAC team.
