Sagehens split with defending SCIAC Tournament
Champions
After a demoralizing 1-11 lost in the first of two games
against La Verne University on February 21, the Pomona-Pitzer
softball team came back to win the second game 3-0, gaining their
first win of the season and defeating last year’s SCIAC
Tournament Champions.
P-P started off strong in the first game when second baseman Arianna Roach (PI ’12) led off the first inning with a double. Roach later scored on a throw down to second, putting the Sagehens up 1-0. However, La Verne was ready to play and quickly put two runs on the board in the second. The Leopards keep control for the rest of the game recording nine hits and scoring four runs in the third and five runs in the fourth. On defense La Verne kept P-P scoreless for the rest of the game, only allowing two more hits after Roach’s double, and took the first game 11-1.
However, the Sagehens were not to be deterred by the loss. Both teams were ready to play in the second game and the score remained tied at zero through the third inning. The Sagehens finally pulled ahead in the fourth, capitalizing on La Verne’s errors. When Emily Aamodt (PO ’09) reached on a two out error Jamie Goldberg (PO ’11) was able to score from second putting one run on the board for the Sagehens. Roach then singled loading the bases for the Sagehens. Another error by La Verne allowed Leanna Guillermo (PI ’09) to reach first and permitted Emily Buika (PI ’12) and Aamodt to both score, putting the Sagehens up 3-0. That would prove to be enough for P-P pitcher Mackenzie Smith (PO ’09), who pitched the entire game giving up seven hits and no runs, and leading Pomona-Pitzer to a 3-0 victory.
Sagehens fall in two close games to ranked Chapman
University
Coming off a win to La Verne University, the Pomona Pitzer Sagehens
came out looking aggressive against the nationally ranked Chapman
University Panthers. In two close games the Sagehens fell 1-3 and
3-5, but proved that they can compete with a nationally ranked
opponent.
Chapman was the first to score in the first game, putting three runs on the board in the second inning, scoring one run on an RBI single to left field and two more on P-P errors. In the fourth the Sagehens fought back when Alexis Garcia (PI ’11) singled to lead off the inning. Brianna Marcantoni (PI ’12) then doubled to score Garcia. Although the Sagehens, led on the mound by Mackenzie Smith (PO ’09), out hit the Panthers six to five, they could not recover from Chapman’s early lead and fell 1-3.
In the second game Chapman again
scored first putting one run up in the first inning. Yet, P-P tied
it up in the third when Christine Calderon (PO ’09) hit a
bases loaded bomb that was barely snagged by the Chapman center
fielder at the fence. The sacrifice fly scored Leanna Guillermo (PI
’09), tying the game up at one. In the fifth inning the
Sagehens went ahead when Garcia scored on a wild pitch. Calderon
then followed singling to center field and scoring Marcantoni,
giving the Saghens a 3-1 lead. However, Chapman fought back in the
bottom of the fifth scoring twice on a double down the left field
line, another on a passed ball, and then again on a one run
homerun, which put them back ahead. Neither team scored again and
the Sagehens fell to the Panthers in the second game 3-5.
