Softball Splits with CMS

After falling to the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team in game one, the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens came back to beat the second-seeded Athenas 1-0 in game two of the rivals’ final double-header of the season.
In game one, the Sagehens were unable to overcome strong pitching from CMS’s Erika Weingart, who held Pomona-Pitzer to two hits through five innings. After scoring a run in the first, the Athenas broke the game open in the third inning, bringing six runs across the plate. CMS scored once more in the fourth to bring the final score to 8-0.
Game two proved to be a pitchers duel between
Mackenzie Smith (PO ’09) and CMS’s Julia Cruz (SC
’10). Smith was dominant on the mound, pitching all seven
innings and allowing only three hits, while Cruz was dominant
through four innings. In the fifth inning, Leanna Guillermo (PI
’09) started off a Sagehen rally, singling to lead off the
inning. Guillermo took second on a wild pitch. Brianna Marcantoni
(PI ’12) then singled, advancing Guillermo to third.
Guillermo scored on an RBI single from lead-off batter Arianna
Roach (PI ’12) to put the Sagehens up 1-0. That was enough
for Smith who kept the Athenas from scoring the rest of the game
and led the Sagehens to a 1-0 victory.
