Softball Weekend Review

Unable to come up with big hits in key situations, the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens fell to their archrivals Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday, losing 0-9 and 3-6.

Melanie Gularte (PI, ’10) took the mound for the Sagehens in the first game and appeared dominant through the first four innings, giving up only two hits and zero runs. However, CMS pitcher Erika Weingart had similar success also allowing no runs on two hits. In the fifth CMS broke the game open scoring six runs on seven hits. In the sixth CMS put three more runs on the board putting them up 9-0. In the sixth Leanna Guillermo (PI, ’09) doubled, but it wasn’t enough to start a Sagehen rally and P-P fell, 9-0.

CMS picked up where the had left off in the second game, scoring one run in the first inning, two in the second and putting one more on the board in the third. However, the Sagehens rallied back in the fourth scoring one run on an RBI double by Christine Calderon (PO, ’09). In the fifth P-P scored twice more on an RBI single by Alexis Garcia (PI, ’11) and an RBI double by Mackenize Smith (PO, ’09). Yet, CMS scored in both the sixth and the seventh, putting them up 6-3. P-P could not close the deficit and took their second lose of the day, 6-3.
