CLAREMONT, CA -- Senior Sarah Markowitz tallied four goals on the day as the Pomona-Pitzer women's lacrosse team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in their opening game of the 2016 season by the score of 8-5.
The Athenas played some good defense early in the game as it took the Sagehens time to get their offense going. Junior Rebecca Long started the scoring off for the Sagehens as she scored the first goal of the season with 26:02 to go in the first half off of an assists from senior Aubrey Douglass to give the Sagehens an early lead.
Douglass then went on to score her first goal of the season at the 15:07 minute mark off of a pass from junior Sallie Marx as Pomona-Pitzer went on to score three goals in the next six minutes with Markowitz scoring her first with 15:07 remaining and Long added her second goal of the day with 11:09 left in the first half.
CMS finally got on the board with 38 seconds left in the first half as Corie Hack took a free position shot and found the back of the net as the Sagehens went into the break with a 4-1 lead.
The second half was more evenly played than the first as both CMS and Pomona-Pitzer scored four goals each. The Athenas got their first goal of the half as Zoe Pinczower weaved through Sagehen defenders and scored an unassisted goal just over three minutes into the half.
Pomona-Pitzer went on to score three-straight goals with freshman Lilly Thomey scoring her first goal of the season with a spin move inside and Markowitz tallied two more goals coming off of free position shots as the Sagehens took a 7-2 lead with 13:06 remaining.
CMS battled back as they put together back-to-back goals as Katie Hill and Christina Coffin both scored off of free position shots to cut the Sagehens' lead down to 7-4.
Markowitz came back to score her fourth and final goal of the day as she broke through the CMS defense and found the back of the net to put the Sagehens up 8-4.
Katie Hill found the net for the Athenas for her first goal of the year off of an assist from Hack but the Athenas couldn't find enough offense as the Sagehens take their home opener against CMS.
