Pomona-Pitzer Opens 2012 Season At CMS Saturday
Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team opens its 2012 season when it travels across the street to take on neighboring rival Clarmeont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday afternoon.
The Sagehens will field an exceptionally young team, as senior attack Martha Marich (McLean, Va.) is the only player older than a sophomore on the 15-player roster. Pomona-Pitzer also has five sophomores and nine freshmen.
While the team may be young, it won't lack for scoring. Marich was the leading goal-scorer in the country as a sophomore in 2010, when she scored 113 goals.
Last year, Marich had her season cut short after 11 games with a knee injury and still led the team in scoring with 56 goals. However, current sophomores Logan Galansky (Denver, Colo.) and Jana London (Chevy Chase, Md.) each scored 55 goals, which gave the Sagehens 166 goals from its top three goal scorers.
Sophomore Kaitlin Jones (Minneapolis, Minn.) was also a key contributor in the midfield her freshman season, sophomore Rachel Kessler (Portland, Ore.) was one of the team's top defenders, and sophomore Casey Leek (Netherlands) played every minute in goal and had a 12.48 goals against average.
The returners will be joined by a talented recruiting class of nine players, who will be asked to contribute right away out of necessity.
After facing CMS on Saturday, the Sagehens will have their home opener on Saturday, Feb. 18 against Whittier at 10:30 a.m.
