Sagehens Cruise To First SCIAC Win, Defeat Caltech 62-41

Claremont, Calif. - Junior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif.) had 19 points and junior guard Vanessa Ho (San Francisco, Calif.) added 14 off the bench as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team captured a 62-41 win over Caltech on Saturday.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 3-12 overall and 1-3 in the SCIAC, while Caltech slips to 0-15 overall and 0-4 in league play with the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer closed the first half on a 7-0 run to turn a close 24-19 game into a 31-19 lead at the break. Freshman forward Maria Weyhrauch (Juneau, Alaska) started the run with a three-pointer to give the Sagehens some momentum heading into the break.

Pomona-Pitzer then started the second half on a 9-1 run to extend its lead to 40-21, as freshman guard Caroline Zaia (Napa, Calif.) hit a pair of jumpers during the stretch. The 16-1 run spanning both halves effectively put the game out of reach. Ho (pictured) helped salt the game away by scoring 11 of her 14 points in the second half, including three of her four three-pointers.

Zaia had a strong all-around game for the Sagehens with nine points, five assists and a season-high seven steals. Senior forward Asha Gipson (San Diego, Calif.) contributed 12 rebounds, while Weyhrauch and fellow freshman Ruthie Shapiro (Moraga, Calif.) each finished with eight points and six rebounds.

Caltech was led by Rachel Hess with 15 points and Marlyn Moore with 11, while Theresa Juarez pulled down 16 rebounds for the Beavers.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Thursday when it travels to Whittier for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
