Cal Lutheran Jumps Out Early, Defeats Sagehens
Thousand Oaks, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran Women's Basketball team jumped out to a 16-0 lead and captured a 71-45 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops the Sagehens, which were led by 22 points from junior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif.) to 2-11 overall and 0-2 in the SCIAC, after it also suffered a slow start (14-0) in its first conference game at Redlands on Thursday. Cal Lutheran improves to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in the SCIAC with the win.
The Sagehens did not get on the board until sophomore guard Emi Hashizume (San Mateo, Calif.) hit a three-pointer at the 12:43 mark to make the score 16-3. Cal Lutheran built its lead up to 29-5, before a 7-0 run, sparked by five points from Sones, got Pomona-Pitzer back within 29-12.
A Hayley Jensen fastbreak lay-up closed out the half and gave the Regals a 37-18 lead into the break, as Sones had 12 of Pomona-Pitzer's 18 points.
Back-to-back three-pointers from Cal Lutheran's Chelsey Hastigan stretched the lead up to 23 points early in the second half (43-20) and the Regals were able to cruise the rest of the way.
The Sagehens were held to 24 percent shooting from the floor (12-50) on the day. Jasmyne Porter led the Regals with 13 and Hayley Jensen added 12.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Thursday when it returns home for a 7:30 p.m. game against Occidental.
