Sagehens Face Tough Test In Undefeated Piedmont

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team will face a tough challenge on Saturday (4 p.m.) when it entertains Piedmont College at the Rains Center in its final game before the Holiday break.

Piedmont is making a three-game West Coast trip (also facing CMS and La Verne) with a 7-0 record on the year. The Lions are led by post player Sada Wheeler, a transfer from the University of South Carolina, who is averaging over 17 points and 15 rebounds a game.

Pomona-Pitzer, meanwhile, is coming off a breakout performance in its last game, an 89-73 win over Arizona Christian for its first victory of the year. Three players scored in double figures for the Sagehens, sophomore guard Emi Hashizume (San Mateo, Calif.) with 24 points, senior forward Asha Gipson (San Diego, Calif.) with 23 points and freshman forward Maria Weyhrauch (Juneau, Alaska - pictured) with 20 points.

Gipson had an impressive all-around stat line against Arizona Christian, tallying 23 points, 15 rebounds and seven steals. The 23 points broke her previous career high (set as a sophomore) by nine, while the rebounds and steals totals were also season-highs.

Weyhrauch, who will have a tough head-to-head challenge with Wheeler on Saturday, also tallied her personal high with 20 points against Arizona Christian. Hashizume, meanwhile, led the Sagehens in scoring for the fourth time this season and raised her average to a team-best 14.8 points per game.

After facing Piedmont, the Sagehens will have two weeks off before returning to action against Transylvania on New Year's Eve.
