Linfield Cools Off Sagehens, Pulls Away Late For 57-50 Win

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team led deep into the second half, but Linfield used a late 11-0 run to capture a 57-50 win over the Sagehens on Tuesday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

The loss drops Pomona-Pitzer to 0-3 on the young season, although the Sagehens have shown significant improvement in one week's time, as it lost on opening day 77-49 to San Diego Christian and 57-44 in its second game to Pacific. Linfield moves to 3-1 with the win.

Led by the hot outside shooting of sophomore Emi Hashizume (San Mateo, Calif. - pictured) and junior Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif.), the Sagehens took a 33-29 lead into halftime. Hashizume hit four three-pointers in the first half for a team-high 14 points (before finishing with 21), while Sones was right behind with 10 (before finishing with 16).

The duo stayed hot at the beginning of the second half, and two foul shots from Hashizume made it 46-42 with 9:50 to play. An 18-foot jumper from freshman forward Maria Weyhrauch (Juneau, Alaska) gave Pomona-Pitzer a 48-46 lead with 6:51 to go, but then Gretchen Owens took over for Linfield to provide the difference.

Owens stepped into the passing lane for a steal (after deflecting two passes earlier in the possession) to tie the game up at 48-48 with 5:57 left. After two foul shots from Brynna Fuller put the Wildcats in front, Owens hit a big three-pointer with 4:25 to make the score 53-48, then hit a tough baseline fadeaway with 3:41 to go to stretch the lead to 55-48.

The Sagehens then couldn't find its outside shooting touch, and Kaely Maltman capped off the 11-0 run for Linfield with a driving lay-up to make the score 57-48 with 1:48 left. Two foul shots from senior Asha Gipson (San Diego, Calif.) with 48 seconds left closed out the scoring.

Owens finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Linfield, while Maltman had 13 points and seven assists, and Tyra Barawis came off the bench for 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Freshman guard Ruthie Shapiro (Moraga, Calif.) led the Sagehens with 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Erin Edmonds (Salem, Ore.) had five assists and Gipson tallied four steals. Linfield outscored the Sagehens 24-2 in the paint as Pomona-Pitzer did most of its offensive damage with the outside shot against the Wildcats zone defense.

Pomona-Pitzer returns to action Thanksgiving Weekend at the David Wells Classic, facing Arizona Christian on Friday at 5 p.m. (at CMS) and hosting UC Santa Cruz on Saturday at 7 p.m.
