Rabak Helps Sagehens Salvage Split In Final Tuneup Before SCIAC Tourney
Claremont, Calif. - Junior third baseman Kathryn Rabak (Grass Valley, Calif.) was 2-for-2 with two RBI in a 5-2 win in the nightcap as the Pomona-Pitzer Softball team closed out the regular season by splitting two with Cal Lutheran on Saturday.
Cal Lutheran won the opening game 7-6 with a Sarah Lichtsinn RBI single in the bottom of the seventh after Pomona-Pitzer had rallied to tie the game with three runs in the top of the seventh (capped off by a pinch-hit Rabak lineout for a sacrifice fly).
The split concludes the regular season at 22-17 and 15-9 in the SCIAC for the Sagehens, who could have pulled even with CMS and taken the second seed in the SCIAC Tournament if it swept both games and CMS lost both to first-place Redlands tomorrow. Cal Lutheran finishes the year at 12-28 and 5-19 in the SCIAC.
After her lineout to center with the bases loaded tied the game in the seventh inning in the opener, Rabak earned a start in game two and got the offense going with an RBI double in the second. Pomona-Pitzer then added three runs with two outs in the fourth, as freshman left fielder Ashley Morello (Santa Cruz, Calif.) had an RBI single and senior shortstop Ari Roach (Pinole, Calif.) added a two-run single. Rabak added a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make the score 5-0, and the Sagehens held on from there.
Morello and Roach also got the seventh inning rally started in the opening game with back-to-back singles as the Sagehens were trailing 6-3 going into their last ups. Freshman center fielder Leah Bleichner (Simi Valley, Calif.) reached on an error to load the bases with nobody out and senior first baseman Bri Marcantoni (Chino Hills, Calif.) had a sacrifice fly to make the score 6-4.
Freshman catcher Emily Glass (Davis, Calif.) walked to load the bases, and sophomore designated player Caitlyn Hynes (Upland, Calif.) followed with another walk to make the score 6-5. Rabak's liner then tied the score (although it threatened for more) and an error re-loaded the bases before Katelyn Downing got out of the jam with a groundout. "
Cal Lutheran used an unearned run to win the game in the bottom half, as an error put Shannon Tinsley (who hit a three-run homer earlier in the contest to give the Regals a 3-2 lead) on base. A sacrifice moved her over to second, and Lichtsinn's single through the left side gave Tinsley just enough time to score the winning run.
Marcantoni was 2-for-3 with three RBI in the opening game, while Bleichner was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Morello was 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Roach was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the nightcap, joining Rabak in the two-hit club, and Bleichner threw two innings to get the save in support of starter Jessica Liu (Alamo, Calif.), who threw four innings to get the win.
Pomona-Pitzer will open the SCIAC Tournament next Friday at Redlands with a game against second-seeded CMS, which it swept yesterday in its final home games (5-0, 2-1) after losing the two games across the street at CMS earlier this season (6-5, 5-1).
