Men's Water Polo Holds Off Chapman In Overtime
Claremont, Calif. - Freshman Stephen Vint (El Cajon, Calif. - pictured) scored two of his four goals in the fourth quarter and added another in overtime as the Sagehens held off Chapman for a 17-14 overtime win over Friday afternoon at the Claremont Convergence.
The win improves the Sagehens' record to 2-12 on the year, as it played its first opponent all season that was not ranked in the national top 20.
Chapman trailed 4-3 at the half, but used a six-goal explosion in the third quarter to pull ahead 9-6 at one point. The Sagehens got back within 9-7 at the end of the third, and pulled even at 10-10 with 5:52 left on a goal from junior Mark Hudnall (Los Altos, Calif.). Hudnall again evened the score at 11-11 with 4:37 left, before Vint struck for back-to-back goals to give Pomona-Pitzer temporary control ay 13-11 with 2:37 remaining.
However, Chapman struck for two goals 12 seconds apart as Pierre Masson and Mark Alvarado scored to tie it up at 13-13 with 1:05 to play. After Vint was denied with the shot clock expiring, senior goalkeeper Kyle Pokorny (Coronado, Calif.) had a big save with 22 seconds left, but junior Cody Moore (San Dimas, Calif.) had his shot from in close hit the post with two seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime.
Hudnall scored his fourth of the game to put Pomona-Pitzer ahead 14-13 on its first possession of the extra session, but Brett Carter scored a long goal as the shot clock expired to even it back up with 1:30 left in the first overtime. The Sagehens, though, scored the final three goals of the game, as Dylan O'Connell (River Forest, Ill.) broke the tie with 1:13 left in the first overtime, and Moore and Vint added second-overtime goals on counters to seal it.
Vint, Hudnall and Jason Cox (Arnold, Md.) all had four goals for the Sagehens, while Moore added three and Pokorny finished with 12 saves. Jack Cutler led Chapman with four goals.
The Sagehens will be back in action this evening for a 6 p.m. game against Johns Hopkins.
