Men's Water Polo Defeats Navy To Break Into Win Column
Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team defeated Navy 10-7 in front of a standing room only crowd at Haldeman Pool on Saturday evening.
Earlier in the day, the Sagehens dropped a 14-8 decision to Cal Baptist. The split moves Pomona-Pitzer to 1-7 on the season against a difficult schedule.
"Everyone we've played this year has been in the top 20," said head coach Alex Rodriguez. "And Navy is a team that beat LMU earlier in the day, and was ready to maybe move into the top 10. This was a big win for us, since we have some more tough matches coming at Santa Barbara and USC."
The Sagehens used a 5-0 run to turn a 4-3 deficit in the second quarter into an 8-4 lead heading into the fourth. Senior Jaron Moler (Carmichael, Calif.) knotted the score at 4-4, and then junior Jason Cox (Arnold, Md. - pictured, photo courtesy of Bryan Matsumoto) gave Pomona-Pitzer a 5-4 lead heading into the break with a goal at the 2:18 mark of the second quarter.
Cox added his second goal of the match in a 3-0 third quarter, sandwiched between a pair of goals from junior Mark Hudnall (Los Altos, Calif.). Navy got as close as 8-5 and 9-6 in the fourth quarter, but key goals from junior Cody Moore (San Dimas, Calif.) and sophomore Dylan O'Connell (River Forest, Ill.), his second of the game, prevented the Midshipmen from making a run.
Senior Kyle Pokorny (Coronado, Calif.) went the distance in goal and had seven saves for the Sagehens.
In the first match, Cox, O'Connell and sophomore Jarrod Gaut (Irvine, Calif.) each scored two goals, but Cal Baptist jumped out to a quick lead and held on for a 14-8 win. Matt Puig scored three of his match-high four goals early to help give his team a 4-1 lead. Pokorny had four saves, and sophomore Tyler Hill (Lafayette, Calif.) added five.
The Sagehens will be back in action on Saturday with a road match at UC Santa Barbara.
