Men's Tennis: Sagehens Finish Third At Stag-Hen Tournament

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's tennis team finished in third place at the 2016 Stag-Hen Tournament as they finished with a 2-1 record.

The Sagehens fell to Emory in the first game of day two by the score of 6-3 and defeated Trinity in the third place game 5-4. Emory defeated Claremont Mudd-Scripps 7-2 to win the 2016 Stag-Hen Tournament.

Pomona-Pitzer started out its match against Emory as they dropped two of the three doubles matches to start out with a 2-1 deficit.

Graham Maassen and Spencer Simonides got the only win for the Sagehens in the doubles competition as they won in the No. 1 spot by the score of 8-5.

The Sagehens took two of the six singles matches as Maassen won in the No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-4 and Sam Malech took the No. 5 singles match by the score of 6-2, 7-6.

Pomona-Pitzer went on to face Trinity in the third place match in game two of the second day of the Stag-Hen Tournament.

The Sagehens started out the day down 2-1 as they dropped No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches but won in the No. 2 match as the team of Jake Yasgoor and Jonathan Kim took a 9-8 victory.

Despite being down 2-1, the Sagehens rallied and won four of the six singles matches.

Pomona-Pitzer won in the No. 2 singles match as Maassen won the first match 5-0 and won by retirement.

Marko Mandic followed that up with a win in the No. 6 singles by the score of 6-2, 6-2 and Malech took a big win in the No. 5 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory as well.

The match came down to Kim at the No. 3 singles match. Kim's match went into three sets but the senior was able to come out on top as he defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 to clinch a third place finish for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer next takes the court as the Sagehens host Skidmore on Monday, March 14th at 3:00 p.m.
