Sagehens Defeat Redlands In Top-15 Battle
Claremont, Calif. - Connor Hudson (pictured) won at both singles and doubles to help the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team to a 6-3 win over Redlands on Friday at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
With the win, the Sagehens (ranked No. 13 nationally) improve to 11-4 overall and 3-0 in the SCIAC, while No. 15 Redlands slips to 7-10 with the loss.
Hudson and Graham Maassen took an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles to help stake the Sagehens to a 2-1 lead. Hudson then earned a break to wrap up his singles match at No. 3 with a 6-4, 7-5 win to provide the clinching point, giving the Sagehens a 5-3 lead.
Chris Wiechert and Anthony Bello also won their doubles match at No. 1, taking control late for an 8-3 win. Jake Yasgoor earned a win at No. 2 singles when Nick Cummins was forced to take an injury default midway through the first set, giving the Sagehens a 3-1 lead. Jonathan Kim then put Pomona-Pitzer ahead 4-2 with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, and after Redlands closed to within 4-3, Hudson earned the late break to seal the win.
Josh Kim added the final point at No. 6 singles, taking a 6-4, 6-3 win there to make the final score 6-3.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow when it travels down Sixth Street to take on No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for a 6 p.m. contest.
