Freshmen Have Immediate Impact At ITA Regionals
Claremont, Calif. - Freshman Jake Yasgoor upset the top seed in singles, and freshman Anthony Bello combined with senior Chris Wiechert (pictured) to upset the top seed in doubles at the ITA West Regionals this weekend at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Yasgoor defeated top-seeded Warren Wood of CMS on Saturday 6-3, 6-3 to move on to the quarterfinal round. After dropping the first set to David Konstantinov of Whittier, he bounced back with a 6-4 win to force a third set, but Konstantinov finally prevailed.
Wiechert also made it to the Round of 16 in singles, but fell in three sets to Daniel Morkovine of CMS. Freshman Graham Maassen opened his college career with a singles win as well, before falling to eighth-seeded Skyler Butts of CMS, while sophomore Thomas Low earned an opening round win before dropping his second-round match to second-seeded Joe Dorn of CMS.
In doubles, Wiechert and Bello needed to go extra time to win their first round match 9-7, but then found their groove and took out sixth-seeded Chris Goetz and Eli Scandalis of UC Santa Cruz to advance to the quarterfinals. The duo then knocked out top-seeded Dorn and Wood of CMS 8-6 to reach the semis, where their run was stopped by fourth-seeded Alex Nichols and Connor Treacy of Cal Lutheran.
The freshman combo of Maassen and Josh Kim also had a big doubles upset, as they knocked off fifth-seeded Butts and Zhenya Pereverzin of CMS 8-6, and then picked up another win over a doubles team from UC Santa Cruz to reach the quarterfinals, before falling to second-seeded Konstantinov and Chris Schommer of Whittier.
The ITA West Regionals is the lone fall event for the Pomona-Pitzer tennis programs, which will next be in action when they begin their spring season in February.
