Ojai, Calif. - Senior Max Sabel (Sun Valley, Idaho - pictured) and junior Chris Wiechert (Eugene, Ore.) picked up two singles wins on Friday to advance to the Round of 16 at the Ojai Tournament.
Sabel, who is the No. 11 seed in the tournament, opened with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Eli Scandalis of UC Santa Cruz, and then took a 6-2, 7-5 win over Connor Treacy of Cal Lutheran. Sabel trailed Treacy 5-2 in the second set, but won the last five games in a row to take the straight set win. He moves on to face eighth-seeded Julian Seneviratne of Whittier tomorrow for the right to advance to the quarterfinals
Wiechert, who is the No. 14 seed at Ojai, opened with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Alex Johnson of CMS in the first round, and then earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Sam Rodgers of UC Santa Cruz. He will face seventh-seeded Patrick Lipscomb of Redlands in tomorrow's Round of 16.
Sophomore Connor Hudson (Golden, Colo.) earned a 6-4, 6-1 win in the opening round, and took the first set against sixth-seeded Joshua Wong (Willamette) 6-1, before Wong regrouped to win the next two sets and take the match.
In doubles, Sabel and senior Frankie Allinson (McGregor, Texas) won two matches to advance to the quarterfinals, while Hudson and sophomore Connor Sutton (Overland Park, Kan.) also reached the quarters with a pair of wins.
