Meyer, Wiechert Named First-Team All-SCIAC, Sabel, Hudson On Second Team
Claremont, Calif. - Senior Tommy Meyer (Bernville, Pa.) and sophomore Chris Wiechert (Eugene, Ore.) were named first-team All-SCIAC in a vote of the league's men's tennis coaches, it was announced today.
Junior Max Sabel (Sun Valley, Idaho) and freshman Connor Hudson (Denver, Colo.) were also honored from the Sagehens with spots on the second team. Pomona-Pitzer is 14-10 this year and ranked No. 9 in the nation in Division III, heading into the NCAA Regionals this weekend at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Meyer and Wiechert played in the top two singles positions all year long for Pomona-Pitzer. Meyer is currently ranked No. 20 in the country in singles and has four wins this year over opponents ranked in the top 10. He also had wins in both singles and doubles in the SCIAC Championship match against CMS last weekend, and teamed with doubles partner Uday Singh (Beverly Hills, Calif.) to outscore their opponents 24-2 in the three rounds of the SCIAC Tournament.
Wiechert compiled an 18-6 record in singles this spring, including a stretch of 13 straight victories, 12 of which came against nationally ranked teams (including No. 1 Amherst). He also earned victories in rematches against two of the opponents who beat him this year (Michael Razumovsky of Kenyon, and Alex Lane of CMS in the SCIAC Championship match). A year ago, Wiechert was named the National Division III Rookie of the Year.
Sabel has played at No. 3 singles this season, while also teaming with fellow junior Frankie Allinson (Waco, Texas) at No. 1 doubles. One of his highlights was the clinching singles victory in a 5-4 win over UC Santa Cruz, which the Sagehens had never beaten before.
Hudson moved into the singles line-up right at the start of his freshman year and moved up to the No. 4 spot as the season progressed. He had a pivotal singles win in a 5-4 victory over Cal Lutheran in the SCIAC semifinals this past weekend.
Pomona-Pitzer will begin regional play at CMS on Friday against UC Santa Cruz.
