Allinson/Sabel Advance To Ojai Doubles Quarterfinals
Ojai, Calif. - Pomona-Pitzer's top doubles team of juniors Frankie Allinson (Waco, Texas) and Max Sabel (Sun Valley, Idaho) moved on to the quarterfinals of the Ojai Valley Tournament with a Round of 16 win on Friday.
Allinson and Sabel, who are seeded second in the tournament, defeated Matt Herron and Shogo Shimuzu of Whittier to advance through to tomorrow's quarterfinal round, when they will face Robbie Erani and Alex Lane of CMS at 3:30 p.m.
Pomona-Pitzer did not have anyone advance through both rounds today in singles, as six players were eliminated in the round of 32. One of the bright spots, though, was freshman Kevin Wei (San Diego, Calif. - pictured), who earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over Giancarlo Battaglia of Pacific in his first match before falling to Alex Johnson of CMS.
Uday Singh (Beverly Hills, Calif.), Chris Wiechert (Eugene, Ore.), Connor Hudson (Denver, Colo.), Tommy Meyer (Bernville, Pa.) and Allinson each made it to the Round of 32 before suffering a defeat.
Wiechert and senior Alex Groth (Delavan, Wis.) earned a doubles win over the top team from Chapman in the first round before facing the top seed in the entire tournament, Nicholas Ballou and Raymond Worley of Cal Lutheran and falling in the Round of 16.
Allinson and Sabel will be in action in doubles tomorrow, while the rest of the Sagehens will gear up for next weekend's SCIAC Championships at Redlands.
