Wiechert Named Regional Co-POW By D3Tennis.com
Claremont, Calif. - Sophomore Chris Wiechert (Eugene, Ore.) was named the West Region Co-Player of the Week by Division3tennis.com.
Wiechert earned the honor after a 5-0 week, which included wins over Mary Washington and Swarthmore, and a 4-1 week in doubles with freshman partner Connor Sutton.
Wiechert is in the middle of a stretch of 10 straight singles wins, dating back to a loss to Michael Razumovsky of sixth-ranked Kenyon at the ITA Indoor Nationals on Feb. 24. That has been his only Division III loss of the year (he also fell to NAIA Azusa Pacific on Feb. 4), as he has since rattled off 10 straight wins, nine of which have come against nationally ranked foes.
His ninth straight win also avenged his only Division III defeat as he won a third-set tiebreaker 7-4 to defeat Razumovsky on Friday in the first round of the Stag-Hen Invitational. He added a win later the same day against Skidmore, another three-setter, to stretch his winning streak to 10.
Wiechert shared the honor with Patrick Lipscomb of Redlands, who remained undefeated at No. 1 singles for the Bulldogs with a 4-0 week.
The Sagehens will be back in action this week for a Friday home match against Amherst, the top-ranked team in the nation, at 2 p.m. at Pauley Courts.
