Whittier Scores In First Minute, Cruises To 6-2 Win Over Sagehens
Whittier, Calif. – The Whittier Men's Soccer team scored a goal in the first minute of play and led throughout as it captured a 6-2 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday evening.
Whittier improves to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the league with the win, while Pomona-Pitzer falls to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Whittier took a 1-0 lead just 58 seconds into the game, when Lucas Depinna tapped in a rebound after senior goalkeeper Rollie Thayer (Shorewood, Minn.) made an initial save for the first of his two goals on the evening.
Midway through the first half, Adolfo Santos had a 25-yard screamer into left side of net to make it 2-0, and minutes later, he added an assist as he played a long ball over the top off a Sagehen turnover that found Srdan Jovanovic behind the defense for a breakaway.
Pomona-Pitzer came right back with their only goal of the night as senior Danny Nasry (Portland, Ore.) broke in down the left sideline and played a ball into the middle that was finished in the goalmouth by sophomore forward Nathan Shekita (San Jose, Calif.).
The score stayed 3-1 until midway through the second half when Depinna scored his second of the day on a loose ball in front of the goal to end any comeback hopes. Pablo Gomez added to the margin in the 76th minute when he slotted home a shot off a goalie punt from David Diaz that was headed on by Jovanovic to make the score 5-1.
The Sagehens managed to add a goal to its column when sophomore forward Lawrence McDonald (Oakland, Calif. - pictured) scored on a counter off a Whittier turnover with just over 10 minutes to play, but Whittier added a penalty kick from Matt Evans in the 85th minute to close out the scoring.
The Sagehens held a 21-12 edge in shots on the day, but Diaz had nine saves in goal and back-up Nathan Portalski added a tenth for the Poets.
Pomona-Pitzer will be right back in action on Monday at 4 p.m. when it hosts SCIAC-leading Redlands.
