Late Goal From Mahboubi Gives Men's Soccer 1-0 Win
Thousand Oaks, Calif - Freshman midfielder Arash Mahboubi (La Canada, Calif. - pictured) scored his first career goal with 6:12 left in regulation to give the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team a 1-0 road win over Cal Lutheran on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 6-4 overall and 5-1 in the SCIAC, including five straight conference wins since starting out league play with a loss at Redlands, which is the lone undefeated team left in the SCIAC heading into this weekend.
Mahboubi's goal came from in close off assists from fellow freshmen Nate Shekita (San Jose, Calif.) and Avery Raimondo (Quogue, N.Y.), who connected on a one-touch crossing pass in the 84th minute to find Mahboubi alone in front.
Mahboubi became the 10th different player to score a goal for the Sagehens this season already through the first 10 games. In fact, the first eight goals for Pomona-Pitzer this season came from eight different players.
Rollie Thayer (Shorewood, Minn.) had five saves to get the shutout in goal for the Sagehens, his fourth in his last five starts, while the Sagehen defense had his back with a team save as well. Pomona-Pitzer had a narrow 15-14 edge in shots and a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Rey Rivera-Ramos had four saves for the Kingsmen (1-8, 1-4 SCIAC), while the Cal Lutheran defense also had a team save.
Pomona-Pitzer will next be in action when it hosts Whittier on Wednesday at 4 p.m
