Men's Soccer Hosts Occidental In Key SCIAC Contest Today
Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team will look to extend its three-game conference win streak when it hosts Occidental this afternoon at 4 p.m.
The Sagehens come into the game at 4-4 overall, but 3-1 in the SCIAC after bouncing back from a conference-opening 6-0 loss at Redlands. Since then, Pomona-Pitzer has shut out La Verne 2-0, picked up a big road win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 2-0, and cruised past Caltech on the road 4-1.
As a result of their recent surge, the Sagehens are now tied for second in the conference standings with CMS, one-half game behind Redlands, which is the last unbeaten team left at 3-0. Occidental comes in at 2-2, meanwhile, and can pull even with Pomona-Pitzer with a win.
The Sagehens have turned things around with their defense, as junior goalkeeper Rollie Thayer (Shorewood, Minn.) had back-to-back shutouts to start the conference win streak and allowed one goal off a corner kick against Caltech, which mustered only three shots. Junior captain Erik Munzer (Beverly Hills, Calif. - pictured) anchored the defense for the two shutouts before missing the Caltech game with an injury, but he is expected to return this week.
Pomona-Pitzer has also had a balanced scoring attack, as eight different players scored the team's first eight goals this season, before freshman Lawrence McDonald (Oakland, Calif.) became the first player to get his second goal of the year against Caltech. Freshman Nate Shekita (San Jose, Calif.) also added his second of the season later in the game against Caltech, when he capped off the win with a second-half goal.
After facing Occidental, the Sagehens will travel to Cal Lutheran on Saturday for another key SCIAC game.
