Claremont, Calif. - Nick Kypriano scored the game's only goal in the closing seconds of the first half as the Rutgers-Newark Men's Soccer team captured a 1-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer in the season opener for both teams.
Kypriano's goal came at the 44:58 mark of the first half as he was able to beat Sagehens goalkeeper Rollie Thayer after Pomona-Pitzer was whistled for a foul outside the box.
The Sagehens regrouped after intermission and controlled play in the second half, outshooting Rutgers-Newark 8-2 in the second stanza and holding a 3-0 edge in corner kicks. However, they were unable to get the ball past RNU goalkeeper Kevin Torres, who had five saves on the day.
Erik Munzer had a team-high three shots for the Sagehens, who finished with a 13-8 in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Thayer finished with one save in goal in a losing cause.
Pomona-Pitzer will next be in action when it hosts Carthage on Saturday at 12 noon.
