Jack Lewis (110H) and Colin Flynn (1500m) Win Conference Track Titles
The men's track and field team concluded their regular season with a 4th place finish at the 2009 SCIAC Championships.
Leading the way for the Sagehens was freshman John Lewis who amassed 24 team points. Lewis was the conference champion in the 110HH, finished 2nd in the 100m and 3rd in the 200m dash. Lewis also anchored the team's 4X100m relay squad to a season best mark of 43.34 seconds. The only conference athlete to score more points was Jeff Clark, a senior from Claremont-Mudd.
"John, who holds one of the nation's leading times in the 110HH, was absolutely brilliant. He had several tight races but managed to maintain composure under the pressure of the moment," remarked head coach Tony Boston.
Lewis wasn't the only Sagehen to stand atop the champion's podium. Freshman Anders Crabo dominated the field in the 3000m steeplechase on the first day of competition and fellow freshman Colin Flynn was victorious in the 1500m run.
Coach Boston on Colin
Flynn's Race-
"Flynn, wowed onlookers with his extraordinary performance in the
1500m run. On paper, Colin was not favored to win the race
and even at the midway point no one could have imagined that he
would in fact win (perhaps only Flynn had a sense of what was
to come). By the 1200m mark, an energized Flynn began to rein
in the field until he was in striking distance of the lead runner.
The emphatic roar from the crowd provided the boost of
adrenaline that Flynn needed to over take the leader and bring
closure to the race. I couldn't be prouder of the kid; he
possesses a competitive drive that is inspiring to watch."
Up next for the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens are a pair of post season
meets, UC Riverside 5/2 and Oxy Invitational 5/9. The team
will use these meets as a final tune up before heading to the NCAA
Outdoor Championship.
