February 25 Season Update

February 18
On Wednesday, Pomona-Pitzer played host to the Whittier College
Poets. The Sagehens entered the game with a 9-2 conference
record, with the Poets standing at 8-3. The Sagecocks took an
early 9-2 lead, but by the half Whittier had earned a 36-30
advantage. The Poets led by as many as 13 pts at 52-39, with
12 minutes to play. The Sagecocks started to grind their way
back, and a three-pointer by Adam Chaimowitz tied the game at 62
all with :44 seconds to play. A defensive stop and rebound
gave Pomona-Pitzer the ball with :22 seconds to play. The
Sagecocks ran down the clock for the last shot, and a 15-footer by
David Liss rimmed in and out at the buzzer, and the game was headed
into overtime. The Poets scored first in the overtime period,
and the Sagecocks could manage only 2-9 shooting in the final 5
minutes, as Whittier handed the Sagecocks a 76-70 defeat.
Justin Sexton led PP with 25 pts and 13 rebounds. Liss added 22,
while Chaimowitz chipped in with 10.
February 21
Pomona-Pitzer was again at home to face Cal Lutheran. The
Sagehens won the first meeting in Thousand Oaks by a score of
69-65. Neither team found much separation in the first half,
but a three-pointer by Liss at the halftime buzzer gave the
Sagehens a 29-24 lead at the break. The teams traded the lead
throughout most of the second half, and with just over 5 minutes to
play the score was knotted at 45-45. Down the stretch,
Pomona-Pitzer struggled to get any offensive momentum, and Cal Lu
pulled away with a 61-52 win. The Sagecocks could only manage
25% shooting from the field in the second half.
Gabe Porter and Justin Sexton led the Hens with 15 points apiece,
while David Liss finished with 11.
February 24
In the final regular season conference game, Pomona-Pitzer was on
the road to face the University of La Verne. The Leopards
jumped out to an early 9-2 lead, but by the intermission The
Sagehens led 27-20. Midway through the second half, the
Sagecocks had things well in hand leading 52-33. The final
score: Pomona-Pitzer 63, La Verne 49.
Justin Sexton led the Hens with 18 pts and nine rebounds, David
Liss added 14, Jeremy Namkung 10, and Gabe Porter chipped in five
pts and eight boards.
The final league standings have CMS at 11-3, Pomona-Pitzer 10-4,
Cal Lu 10-4, and Whittier 10-4. The Conference Tournament
opens on Friday, 27 Feb, with Pomona-Pitzer @ Whittier and Cal Lu @
CMS. The two winners will square off on Saturday to determine
the SCIAC’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
