Men's Basketball Update - Through Feb 5, 2009

Jan 28:
Pomona-Pitzer traveled to thousand Oaks to square off against the Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran, with both teams holding a 4-1 conference mark.  PO-PI grabbed the early lead and managed to push the margin as high as 16, but Cal Lu chipped away before the half ended with PO-PI holding a 37-26 lead.  Again in the second half the Sagecocks managed to surge ahead, extended the lead to 18, at 51-33 with just over 12 minutes to play.  Cal Lu wasn’t quite ready to pack it in, and the margin was closed to 68-60 with just under a minute to play.  A Cal Lu steal prompted a foul by PP which the ref called intentional; Cal Lu hit 2 free-throws, hit a 3 off the inbound play, and with :37 seconds remaining, the Sagecocks were holding onto a slim 68-65 lead.  One of two FTs on the Sagecocks next possession, followed by a Cal Lu miss, gave PO-PI a 69-65 victory.

David Liss paced PO-PI with 22 pts, Jeremy Namkung and Gabe Porter had 13 apiece, and Adam Chaimowitz added 11.

Jan 31: On Saturday Pomona-Pitzer hosted the University of LaVerne.  Both teams were slow getting started, but the Sagecocks plodded to an 11-5 lead 7 minutes into the game; by the half the Sagecocks had built a 26-15 advantage.  Into the second half PO-PI began to find their range, and with 6 minutes to play the Sagecocks had pushed the lead to 24.  The final score: PO-PI 58, ULV 36

Liss finished with 14, Justin Sexton 10, and Chaimowitz with 8 points and 9 rebounds.  PO-PI managed only 40% from the floor, but held the Leopards to just 30%.

Feb. 4:  To open the second round of conference play, the Sagecocks were in Pasadena to play Cal Tech.  Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to an early lead, had a 46-23 advantage at the intermission, and never looked back en route to a 91-47 win.  Fourteen different Sagecocks tallied the scorebook, led by Liss with 18, Sexton 11, Namkung and Shawn Stephan with 10 each, Chaimowitz 9, Evan Zahniser 8, and Porter 7.  PO-PI shot 64% for the night.  The win pushed Pomona-Pitzer to a 7-1 conference mark.
