Sweeney Named Second-Team All-West By D3Football.com

Claremont, Calif. - Pomona-Pitzer junior running back Luke Sweeney (Broken Arrow, Okla.) was named second-team All-West Region by D3Football.com, it was announced today.

Sweeney earned the honor after a fall season which saw him lead al of NCAA Division III in rushing at 177.4 yards per game. He will not officially earn the rushing title until the NCAA Division III championship game next weekend, but currently his closest competitor still active, Levell Coppage of Wisconsin-Whitewater, would need to run for 745 yards in the last two games (or 565 if they get eliminated in the semifinals).

As of now, Sweeney currently holds a 16 yards per game lead over the second-leading rusher in Division III, Shawn Morris of Birmingham Southern (161.0 ypg). Sweeney also ranks second in rushing among all divisions of college football, trailing only Jonas Randolph of Division II Mars Hill.

Sweeney broke Pomona-Pitzer program records for rushing yards in a game (265 vs. Occidental) and a season (1419) this fall. He also now holds five of the top 10 single-game rushing totals in program history (which is 119 years old), four of which came this season, including 246 at Whittier, 187 vs. Lewis & Clark and 185 vs. Chapman. He ran for 140 yards or more in seven of his eight games played, and had only two fumbles in his 298 rushing attempts. His 10 rushing touchdowns this fall also tied for fourth in Sagehens history.

Sweeney was one of only three SCIAC players named to the first or second team on offense, along with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps offensive lineman Sam Jolly, and Cal Lutheran tight end Marc Valdez, who were both second-team selections as well. Cal Lutheran running back Daniel Mosier and Redlands tackle Sam Albrecht were on the third team. Coppage shared the West Region Offensive Player of the Year Award, along with Dubuque wide receiver Michael Zweifel.
