'Hens Gentili '13 and Campbell '12 Sign With Walla Walla Sweets
WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Pomona College and
Pitzer College, who combine for athletics to form the Pomona-Pitzer
Sagehens, will send two standout ballplayers to Walla Walla this
summer. Nick Gentili and James Campbell have signed contracts to
play West Coast League baseball for the Sweets after completing
their collegiate seasons in southern California. Gentili, a
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)
second team selection as a freshman in 2010, will join teammate
Campbell, one of the Sagehens leading offensive weapons so far in
the 2011 season.
Gentili, a 6-foot, 2-inch,
185-pound sophomore utility player, hit .384 with 5 HR and 44 RBI
while starting in 41 of the Sagehens’ 42 games last season.
He also appeared on the mound three times and posted an ERA of
3.86. A St. Francis High School product from Glendale, Calif.,
Gentili was named second team all-Mission League as a senior.
Campbell, a 6-foot,
200-pounder from Lookout Mountain, Tenn., was batting .385 with a
pair of stolen bases through seven games for Pomona-Pitzer. The
junior infielder was selected as a member of the Tennessee squad
for the Senior Baseball Classic, an annual all-star game between
the top high school seniors from Tennessee and Georgia, following
his senior season at McCallie High School.
The Sagehens, ranked #18 in
the pre-season NCAA DIII baseball poll, are 8-0 to start the 2011
season, which began on February 4 with a three-game series sweep of
Pacific University followed by an 8-7 victory over #11 Chapman.
Pomona-Pitzer, who compete against Cal Tech, Whittier, La Verne,
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Occidental, Redlands and Cal Lutheran in
the SCIAC, will host to Sweets’ pitching coach Mark
Michaud’s Whitman College Missionaries on February 26-27.
